Travel Certificates for Flights: Do You Need One, and How Soon?

This article is general health information, not a diagnosis or personal medical advice. Reviewed by Dr. Marlo P. Maamo, General Practitioner. For anything specific to your situation, please book a consultation.
Most domestic and international flights don't require a medical certificate for healthy travelers. A Travel Certificate becomes necessary in specific situations: recent surgery or hospitalization, pregnancy past a certain number of weeks, a chronic condition an airline flags at check-in, or a destination country's specific entry health requirement.
Timing matters. Many airlines want the certificate dated within a short window before departure — often 72 hours — so booking too early can mean it's no longer valid on travel day. Confirm your airline's exact requirement before scheduling your appointment.
When you book a Travel Certificate with us, mention your flight date and airline so Dr. Maamo can time the examination and issue the document within the validity window the airline expects.
