When Do You Actually Need a Medical Certificate in the Philippines?

This article is general health information, not a diagnosis or personal medical advice. Reviewed by Dr. Marlo P. Maamo, General Practitioner. For anything specific to your situation, please book a consultation.
Medical certificates in the Philippines are commonly requested in three situations: returning to work after illness (often paired with a Fit to Work clearance), applying for SSS sickness benefits, and confirming fitness to travel for airlines or visa applications.
Each of these has slightly different requirements. A standard Medical Certificate simply confirms your health status at the time of examination. An SSS Sickness Certificate follows a specific format required by the Social Security System for benefit claims. A Travel Certificate confirms fitness to fly and is sometimes required within a set number of days before departure.
If you're not sure which one applies to your situation, describe what the certificate is for when you book — Dr. Maamo will confirm you're getting the right document before your appointment is finalized.
